CHANGING PLACES

Needless to say, this poem is based entirely on personal experience!

CHANGING PLACES

The wise woman rises early,
Stepping into clean, fresh clothes,
Pulling on her lovely crease-free trousers,
Her unwrinkled Tee clinging neatly to her shoulders,
Her shoes so sparkling clean and pretty,
Even the flowers admire them.

‘Bye!’ calls the wise woman,
As she goes singing on her way,
Everyone making room for her.

The tired woman rises far too late,
That extra five minutes somehow getting away from her.
And look! The clothes fairy hasn’t been!
So she wears crumpled Tee and wrinkled trousers.
Her shoes so dusty and dull
Even the flowers try to hide them.

No ‘Bye!’ from this tired woman,
As she goes yawning on her way.

But the wise woman makes room for her,
For tired tomorrow, wise today.

  1. Gwen, I really like this beautiful poem! Yes, why should we get up early? Why should we try to greet the day happily? You describe this very beautifully.

Thank Youand best to you, Gwen!

  2. Very relatable! It makes me wonder — is the “wise woman” just conforming herself to the expectations of others? Is the “tired woman” kicking against them? Who is really the wise one?

  3. At the time I was thinking about when I wrote that poem, Camilla, I had twin sons of a few months old, my husband was working and I was trying to
hold down a well-paying job because we needed the money. Every now and again, things got out of hand! I think for the time my sons were small.
I almost forgot WHO I was. It all balanced out again though later, thankfully, with an extra edge I must say!
    Gwen.
